Heartwood House: au coeur de la vie is a revolutionary grassroots initiative that is having a significant impact on the entire Ottawa community. Imagine fifteen charitable organizations coming together in the same building to share ideas and resources in order to deliver more efficient and effective services, and you are on your way to understanding the basic concept of Heartwood House. But it is so much more!

Coming together to share affordable space has proved highly beneficial for all concerned, but Heartwood House is more than just a nice place to be: it is a model of community. We are always working to make the life of the House better. This includes developing unique projects that add to the Heartwood environment and assist member organizations to provide opportunities for their constituents to broaden their experience.

These efforts have already yielded some significant results (click here for the latest news) since the public launch of Heartwood House on October 25, 2001. For example:

• The HeARTwood Gallery - When the community decided that it needed a dedicated meeting and gathering space, in typical Heartwood fashion, this pragmatic need turned into a dynamic opportunity. We now have not only a beautifully renovated meeting room, but one of the most talked about galleries in Ottawa!
  
• OC Transpo Lost & Found - Many of our member organizations were looking for authentic opportunities for their constituents to develop literacy, social, and employment skills in a supportive environment. From this basic need emerged a remarkable development, as the City of Ottawa announced on December 13, 2001, that Heartwood House was the new home of the OC Transpo Lost & Found. The operation has been very well received by the Ottawa community.
• As well as Heartwood's Computer Recycling Program, everybody wins!
