“Meet our Herd”
Graham Bee (Ottawa) and Kae McColl (Gatineau)
Many thanks to Heartwood House and the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Ottawa (UUFO) for hosting our artwork in their lovely UniHeART gallery. We had fun painting and naming our “heilan coos” and hope visitors will enjoy meeting them.
Highland cattle, called “hairy coos” and beloved in Scotland, have become popular in Canada as well. A fun fact - the Highland Cow is the oldest registered breed of cattle in the world. Their presence was first recorded in the Outer Hebrides in the 6th Century!
Graham Bee has become popular for commissioned portraits of people, pets, sports figures, and even landscape drawings. He prefers subjects with strong contrast of dark and light, which he does in graphite pencil on watercolour paper, adding colour in acrylic washes. Graham is self-taught, and comes from a large extended family of artists, in all about 19 who work in a variety of styles. . imagine the conversations when they get together!
Kae McColl (Graham’s mom) can’t remember a time when she didn’t draw or paint. She credits her artist mother for introducing all the family to the many materials and allowing perfect freedom to experiment with them. Kae has taken classes and workshops over the years, and prefers to work in acrylics on canvas. She calls most if her work “lyrical landscape” . . a bit abstract, but usually recognizable as some magical place in our beautiful Canadian landscape.

The UniHeART Gallery provides an opportunity for our community to enjoy various forms of artistic expression throughout the year. Artists gain access to quality exhibition space, and they, in return, support and enhance Heartwood programs and the work environment. In addition to exhibiting their work in the UniHeART Gallery, artists may find opportunities to partner with individual member groups, offering workshops or one-to-one art instruction. The ongoing collaboration between artists and the Heartwood community demonstrates the benefits of art as an integral part of our daily lives.
